Frequently asked questions:

How does it work?
The exact way that Botox works to relieve migraines is not known. It has the ability to not only block nerve transmission at the neuro-muscular membrane, but at the cellular level as well. It is possible that Botox inhibits pain pathways through some, as yet, unknown mechanism.
How does Botox compare with other treatments?
Many groups are studying Botox, comparing it directly with other available treatments. It has been found to effectively reduce the symptoms of migraines in the acute phase, completely relieving the pain and related symptoms in about 1 hour. The widely prescribed “triptans”, need to be taken with caution in people with high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, among other medical conditions. It is also used only during or before an acute attack and only has a duration of action for hours as compared to the months of relief observed with Botox.
Is Botox FDA approved for migraines?
Yes! Botox has recently been approved for the treament of migraines.
What is the cost?
The cost is $1400.00 for the treatment. A complete vial of 100 Units is given. Insurance companies occasionally reimburse the patient for these costs. We can help you interact with your insurance companies but there is no assurance that they will pay you any amount at all.
